Clearing my Netflix watchlist + Reccs!

WATCH NETFLIX? LOVE NETFLIX? Here are some reccs bud.....

Tired of scrolling aimlessly on the Netflix Main page not knowing what on Earth to watch while eating lunch?.. Me too!

Tired of going to the 'TOP 10 in Singapore' List, to find something good but then realising they are all S***... Me too! Gone are the days! (I hope...) because I am going to recommend to you some good things to watch on the oldest movie/TV-streaming app on Earth. I realized I have been adding plenty of stuff to my watchlist and not gone around to watching many of them; some of them I've watched but since forgotten to remove.

So what better way to spring-clean my watchlist than by mentioning a few of the gems, calling out the bad ones and warning you against some of the outrightly weird and horrible ones that somehow ended up inside my watchlist. So here we go......

THE GOOD

So these are the rose amongst the thorns. Some of them are essential Netflix classics that you should probably binge-watch because they are so damm good. Most are worth your time and easily fill out that void of boredom.

1. Crime Scene: Vanishing at Cecil Hotel

This super freaky crime story of one Elisa Lam. If you haven't already seen it, there is this youtube video of her that got viral a few years ago. In the video, Elisa can be seen behaving in a very questionable and bizarre manner before she was subsequently found dead and inside the water tank on the rooftop of the Cecil Hotel where she was staying at.

This series details Elisa's story in a very compelling and mysterious light.

2. Headspace: Unwind your mind

A nice short series that helps you relax and unwind after a stressful day. Super easy to follow and comforting for when you need that little bit of zen in your life.

3. Good Girls

A comedy series about a buncha of misbehaving middle-aged women who decide to hold a supermarket hostage. Somehow naughty 30-40-year-old women make good comedy. Just look at Mia Rudolph, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and gang...

4. Money Heist

One of Netflix's most popular series. If you have not watched this, what on earth are you waiting for?!

The story is really addictive but super violent. Spanish Drama series is fast becoming a mainstay of my watchlist because they know how to mix all teledrama's complexities and nuances.

Want lots of drama with shocking plot twists? CHECK.

Violence? CHECK.

Sexual scenes with lovers going at it gratuitously for hours? CHECK.

Money heist delivers all this and more.

5. The Seven Deadly Sins

A Damm good anime series. Watch it.

6. Series of food-themed travel shows

Street Food, Chef's Table and Midnight Asia- All super informative and makes you hungry. Great for learning about food from Singapore and the region.

7. Grace and Frankie

A super hilarious series about a pair of grandmas whose husbands came out as gay. Expect lots of crass humour and vibrators for geriatrics thrown in the mix.

8. The House of Flowers

Saucy melodramatic telenovela that has all the spice and everything nice. Enjoyable and addictive. All the trademarks of a Spanish hit series are intact.

9. Kim's Convenience

A hit Canadian comedy about a pudgy homer Simpson-esque Korean dude and his adventures while tending to a convenience store with his wife.

10. Travel with my Father

Jack Whitehall's ridiculous travelogue with his 80-year-old father. This series is both heartwarming and hilarious at the same time. You never know how much you can learn from your travel partners while on a journey together.

THE BAD

1. The Staircase

In 2001, novelist Michael Peterson's wife passed away. She fell down a flight of stairs to her untimely death. But then, her autopsy results show that she actually suffered fatal blunt trauma to her head instead. The revelation kick-starts a crime-docu series that leads to nowhere and goes around in endless circles. Bad.

2. My Octopus Teacher

I tried my best to appreciate this slow-moving documentary about a diver learning about life from an Octopus while swimming with it in the ocean. A precautionary tale that not everything loved by the Oscar Academy is actually lovable. Boring and horrid.

3. Sexy Beasts

A blind-dating reality show where potential lovers dress up in fur-suits and have dates together to find out if beauty is really skin-deep. As bad as reality TV can get.

THE WEIRD

1. Test Pattern

Picture this.

4 Seasons of nothing much happening except a robot counting from 1 to 59. Set to a backdrop still of a little girl playing instruments.

Apparently, It is a testing device Netflix used prior to its launch and has remained in the catalogue ever since.

2. Michael Bolton's Big Sexy Valentine's Day Special

Bolton's faux-telethon that promises to make 75000 new babies in 9 months time. Let me know if it worked for you.

3. Moving Art

Filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg highlights the beauty that lurks in oceans, forests, deserts and flowers. All set to background elevator music.

Seems like one of those Ads they play on televisions in shops like Courts and Harvey Norman. For what? I dunno...

4. Fireplace For your home

60 minutes of logs burning in a fireplace. To calm the mind or as a digital deco for Christmas? Weird flex but ok.

Other fun things to watch (that i'm too lazy to write about):

  • Young, Famous and African

  • Vikings

  • The Circle

  • Explained Series

  • The Last Kingdom

  • Emily in Paris

  • Ozark

  • Unorthodox

  • Army of the Dead

  • Queer Eye

  • Our Planet

OK. Hope you now have something to watch

GO FORTH AND NETFLIX

Thanks for Reading,

Leon
